Mohammed Aboutrika, former African Best Player of the Year and former Egypt international, has been declared a terrorist by authorities in the North African country.
His lawyer has confirmed that the Egyptian authorities have added the former Al Ahly star to a terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
As reported by BBC.com Aboutrika is accused of financially supporting the Brotherhood, which Egypt considers a terrorist organisation.
Any person named on the country’s terror list is subject to a travel ban and might have their passport and assets frozen.
Aboutrika’s lawyer, Mohamed Osman, said the move was “contrary to the law”, and that his client had “not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him”.
“We will appeal this decision,” Osman said.
“Mr Aboutrika has however denied the allegations.”
